Deaf Employees
In July 2007 Afhco embarked on an innovative project with eDeaf by employing 2 deaf cleaners in an Afhco building. Afhco currently employ 5 individuals. Relevant head office staff as well as building managers and cleaners were trained in sign language so that communication could be made easier.
The project was such a success that eDeaf approached Afhco in June 2008 with a proposal to act as a host employer for a further 4 deaf cleaners on a learnership program. The program is run by eDeaf with bursaries from Services SETA and training provided by Siyaya, the largest hygiene and cleaning training service in South Africa.
Afhco has enrolled 3 of the deaf staff members on an ABET training course at the eDeaf offices. They have all done their assessments and will complete their respective level within the next 6 months.
